Information and Communication Technology

Computers are now part of everyday life and, for most of us, technology is essential to our lives at home and at work.  The Computing/ICT department aims to equip Sixth Form girls with the skills, knowledge and understanding of computing that they will need to be ready for the workplace and able to participate effectively in the digital world.

At AS and A2, our exciting specification brings the study of ICT up to date for the 21st century. It has the backing of a range of industries, higher education and the National Computing Centre.

At AS, you will study ICT in the Digital World – the practical use of ICT, developments in technology and the use of ICT in organisations all helping to prepare you for the future. You will apply ICT to solve problems as well as looking at the opportunities for and the effects of using ICT in the world today. At A2 you will study the concepts associated with the use of ICT in the 21st century.

The key points of this specification are that: 

• It allows greater opportunities for practical work than previous specifications
• Practical work can be carried out using a much wider range of software and hardware
• It allows for greater flexibility in modes of delivery
• Students can be truly engaged in their studies by becoming active investigators rather than passive learners

The specification has been developed for students who wish to progress to higher education or to the world of work, where understanding how ICT can be used in society and organisations, and the implications of its use, will be a valuable asset.

What will I be studying?

This course gives students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in IT Systems, Systems Management and Social Media in Business.

The first year involves exploring how Businesses use Social Media to promote their products and services. Students will implement Social Media activities in a Business to meet requirements. The Creating Systems to Manage Information module involves the design, creation, testing and evaluation of a relational database system to manage information.

In the second year, students study the role of Computer Systems and the implications of their use in personal and professional situations. Students also study how Data Modelling can be used to solve problems. A Data Model will be designed and implemented to meet client requirements.

What does the subject involve?

The BTEC Level 3 National Certificate is a one-year course (equivalent to one AS Level) and the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate is a two-year course (equivalent to one A Level).

Year 1 Units:   

• Creating Systems to Manage Information (Externally Assessed)
• Using Social Media in Business (Internally Assessed)

Extra Units for the 2-year course:                     

• Information Technology Systems (Written Examination)
• Data Modelling (Internally Assessed)

What skills or qualities will I need?

• Good Self-Management – a readiness to accept responsibility, flexibility, time management.
• Team working – cooperation, respecting others, contributing to discussions.
• Problem Solving – analysing facts and circumstances and applying creative thinking.
• Interpersonal skills -  communicating and interacting with people.

These skills are highly sought by employers.

What about future prospects and careers?

Progression to higher education courses and to employment in roles that require computing-related expertise. Many employability skills will be developed during the course and these will enable students to adapt to ever-changing roles needed to survive in the global economy. IT skills are very much in demand in any career.

Do I need to have studied this for GCSE?

No
