Pre Senior Baccalaureate (PSB)

What is the Pre Senior Baccalaureate?

We are the only school in the region to offer the Pre Senior Baccalaureate (PSB), which brings together a vibrant, engaging and relevant academic curriculum with character education, co-curricular involvement, community activities, and roles of responsibility and leadership.

The PSB focuses on a series of core skills that are determined to give our pupils the most rounded skill set for the future. The PSB curriculum encourages pupils to develop their ‘soft skills’, readying them for the challenges and opportunities  they’ll experience in Senior School and beyond.

Our PSB framework is based on the Prep School Baccalaureate, offered at over 20 schools across the country. Visit their website to find out more.

Curriculum & Assessment

Following on from our Fusion Curriculum taught in the Infant and Junior School, the PSB at Sheffield Girls’ is a framework for Year 7 and 8 pupils to help develop the following six life skills:

  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Leadership
  • Independence
  • Reviewing and Improving
  • Thinking and Learning

At the end of Year 8, students will progress to upper school with a Pre-Senior Baccalaureate Certificate. This Award will celebrate their Core Skills Portfolio, alongside their Academic Record. There is also an additional option for students to gain a PSPQ – Pre-Senior Project Qualification – which can be done alongside their PSB.

Benefits of the PSB Education

Through the PSB, our pupils develop:

  • Personal flexibility, communication and cooperation
  • Initiative, persistence and independence
  • Attention to detail, self-control, and dependability
  • Independent decision making
  • Mechanical reasoning, logic, trouble-shooting and spatial visualisation

These skills have been academically assessed to be the most important skills for an individual to thrive in our changing world and to flourish within their chosen career.

We use this framework in the knowledge that our students will thrive in their personal and professional lives in the 21st century benefitting from the independence, self-belief, emotional intelligence and sense of purpose this programme offers them. It will further embed a love of learning and a sense of curiosity in, and responsibility for, the world around them.
