Sunday Times says Sheffield Girls’ is on top

Sheffield Girls’ is proud of being named top highest performing school in Sheffield/South Yorkshire and fifth for independent schools in the North in the 26th edition of Parent Power, published in the Sunday Times.

Parent Power is the esteemed database of 2000 leading schools in the UK, which parents across Britain use as a valuable resource to decide which schools are the very best for their children. It is named by the Sunday Times as “the most comprehensive resource covering elite school performance in the UK”, allowing parents to search and compare examination performances of both primary and secondary schools, divided into independent and state categories.

This prestigious placement as one of the best academic schools follows last year’s outstanding GCSE and A Level results. Almost half of all GCSE entries were awarded the top grades of A*/9/8, as well as over a third achieving the top grade 9 in Mathematics, and 80% achieved A*/A in subjects including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Spanish, German, French and Latin. Sixth Form pupils saw similarly fantastic results, with 52% of entries graded A*/A, which is notably the highest percentage in 4 years.

Headmistress Valerie Dunsford, who retired in the summer of 2018, said, “This year we are seeing even more students secure their first choice place at university and we are seeing a real breadth and diversity of undergraduate subjects from the traditional courses like Veterinary Science, Law and Medicine to Japanese, Politics, Mechanical Engineering and International Relations.

“Sheffield Girls’ primary aim is to ensure all pupils realise their potential. These students have grasped every opportunity they have been given and we hope this gives them the platform to go on and achieve even greater things throughout their careers and lives.”

New Head Nina Gunson is just as proud of the girls’ achievements and is set to continue the school’s consistently excellent academic results, saying, “The results are a real credit to the students and teaching staff.
