Sheffield Girls’ retains the Eco-Schools Green Flag award

We are absolutely delighted that we have maintained our Eco-Schools Green Flag award this year, and have done so for over a decade now - a real achievement!

The Green Flag is an international accreditation scheme that recognises young people’s engagement in environmental issues that are important to them and their local community. Award-holders are reassessed every two years, and this year working towards the Green Flag was made particularly tough due to Covid-19.

Our pupils across the school have been and continue to engage with environmentally conscious issues throughout the year. Year 1 have worked on a Habitats topic and produced artwork reflecting different ecosystems, Year 6 worked on natural classification and observational skills in the local Botanical Gardens, and Year 9 spent a day in Scarborough early this academic year investigating the effects of tourism. Our Year 12 Industrial Cadets team worked on a corporate project creating a plan to reduce the carbon footprint of a BorgWarner factory.

Looking forward, we are excited that next year we are going to be using a new system of energy monitoring with Energy Smart to help us reduce our gas and electricity usage. We are also hoping to take part in a number of activities and campaigns to mark the COP26 UN Climate Change Summit taking place in Glasgow in November, and the GDST's Year of Sustainability running over the academic year 2021-2022.

We’re thrilled by this news, and we’re looking forward to continuing our work with our pupils focussing on sustainability and environmental awareness.
