Prize Giving 2019

On Thursday 12th September we were joined by pupils, parents, teachers and the school’s governors for our annual Prize Giving ceremony. Hosted at Sheffield University’s Octagon Centre, we enjoyed a wonderful evening celebrating academic and co-curricular achievements.

The girls graced the stage to collect their GCSE and A-Level certificates, as well as a whole host of awards and prizes for their academic achievements, and progress in a number of subjects across the board. Guests were treated to a range of performances including the school orchestra’s rendition of the Star Wars theme song, dance routines, a translation bee and a snippet from of our production of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew.

We were delighted to welcome special guests the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Tony Downing and Master Cutler, Nicholas Cragg. Head, Nina Guson opened the evening with a report about the 2018/19 academic year, followed by some inspirational words from alumna Lucy Garside, now a Detective Constable with South Yorkshire Police. Lucy shared her story of changing paths after finishing her degree in fashion design and gave some advice to the girls for the future: 

“Reflecting on what Sheffield Girls’ gave me, the reality is, the grades matter not, it gave me the strength to pick myself up when I left university, to accept my path had become a bumpy road for a bit and to put myself back together again.

“It is also important to remember insecurity and confidence can go hand in hand. Vulnerability can be positive, and I am proof you can find the strength in that vulnerability.”

The evening concluded with a vote of thanks from Head Girl, Emma Crookes, to staff, parents and peers as we look forward to another fantastic year at Sheffield Girls’.
